What is Tie-Dye

Tie-Dye is a technique for dying natural fabrics that results in interesting, colorful patterns. The technique involves crumpling, pleating or folding the fabric into various patterns, then tying it with strings, hence the name. The tied fabric is dipped into vats of dye, then wrung out and rinsed. Tied areas accept dye unevenly amidst the folds. Creating varied patterns in the finish product.
The process of tie-dye has been practiced in Africa for centuries, especially in Western Africa, Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Gambia. Most tie-dye cloths are made of bazin; a thick fabric used as traditional clothing. Tie-dyed products are worn in everyday life.
These women often form groups in which they create tie dyed items together. The collectivistic effort is rewarded by the women’s ability to create their own businesses in order to sustain themselves and their families.
THE PROGRAM:
OUR HOLISTIC APPROCH TO THE ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN TIE-DYERS:
The members of There Is No Limit Foundation have chosen 100 women from Guinea in the region of Kindia. Kindia is a region famous for tie-dye and its women are renowned for their practical tie-dying skills. There Is No Limit Foundation is collaborating with the women of Kindia in order to help them expend their tie-dying business to more places as well as improve their skills. By creating their own businesses, these women are pulling themselves out of poverty. The program provides more income, better jobs, helps communities and strengthens communities.
The finished product are sent to America and sold through our website.
The tie-dyed cloths are also exposed and sold during our Annual “La Guinais Gala.” The cloths are designed by the founder Mariama Petrolawicz and her team in order to celebrate the hard work of the women in Kindia.
